Describe the kind of attention
A tactical game asks players to respond to the current position. Some people enjoy that close focus; others may prefer a lighter conversation. Name the experience before choosing the box.
Explain one meaningful choice
A small example can show the trade-off in a turn. Explain what is gained and what is given up without dictating the supposedly best move.
Agree a comfortable pace
Discuss whether long turns feel enjoyable or tiring. A friendly reminder can help, but an unexpected timer can change the experience. Use one only if the group agrees.
Leave advice optional
Commentary on every move can make a new player feel watched. Offer help as an invitation and let the person decline it without turning the decline into a debate.
Separate the result from the person
A score records what happened under one set of rules. It does not measure intelligence, friendship or the value someone brought to the evening.
